Mission
Heredia-Arriaga students are bilingual and bi-literate, self-aware, reflective individuals who can draw on social-emotional competencies, cultural competency, and critical thinking to thrive personally, socially, and academically. Students understand their role and impact on their communities and global society.
Program Structure
Heredia Arriaga is a 90/10 Dual Immersion Program for TK-8th grade students. It initially began as a TK-K school in the 2023-24 school year. Each year thereafter, the school will add one grade level and grow the program. Students leaving in 8th grade will be referred to high school opportunities to continue their Spanish education.
To ensure that the school accomplishes its mission, HAS staff is committed to prioritizing the development of the three pillars of dual language education: bilingualism and biliteracy, high academic achievement, and sociocultural competence.
The school commits to defining expectations for achievement that consider the program's unique features and allow for an asset-based and culturally responsive approach. HAS staff will continuously assess the effectiveness of the program and will seek out ongoing professional development opportunities to improve their teaching practices. They will also foster a strong sense of community among students, families, and staff.
They will provide opportunities for families to participate in their children's education and to celebrate their cultures and languages. By prioritizing the development of bilingualism and biliteracy, high academic achievement, and sociocultural competence, the HAS staff is dedicated to providing a high-quality education that prepares students for success in a global society.
Teachers at Heredia-Arriaga use the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards or the California History/Social Sciences Framework to develop integrated thematic units of study. Supplemental materials are used to enhance and support the curriculum as needed.
At Heredia-Arriaga, we know the importance of teaching our students to be proactive members of our society who understand the value of their identities, biliteracy, and multilingualism. Our goal is the development of well-rounded, caring individuals who demonstrate social competence and self-worth.
Our SEL framework will draw from the Toolbox Project and CASEL. Students will learn strategies to help them identify and regulate their own social-emotional competencies and develop social awareness and relationship skills to see those competencies in others.
