Discovery High School provides students with unique, individualized opportunities that lead to college and career readiness and self-sufficiency.
Discovery High School’s budget, staffing, and course offerings are grounded in the school’s purpose statement, “Discovery High School provides students with unique, individualized opportunities that lead to college and career readiness and self-sufficiency.” Discovery High School provides a WASC-accredited alternative educational opportunity for students of Natomas Unified School District. Discovery is an alternative to the community’s traditional high schools offering smaller class sizes, more opportunities for individualized attention, and expanded options toward earning a high school diploma. In 2019-20, the California Department of Education recognized Discovery High as a Model Continuation High School (MCHS). Discovery High School was recognized again as a MCHS for the 2022-23 school year. To maintain the school’s status as a model school, we are continuing to implement exemplary instructional strategies, flexible scheduling, and counseling support.
The Discovery High program is not only designed to allow students the opportunity to make up academic and credit deficiencies in an accelerated manner, but also to assist them in earning a high school diploma and being college and career ready. In addition, students are presented with another chance to overcome their academic and/or social challenges, and experience success in school. In addition to standard high school classes such as Integrated Math and Chemistry, Discovery offers CTE pathways in Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, and Building and Construction Trades in state of the art buildings and classrooms. All three pathways offer students the knowledge required to access gainful employment in the food, cosmetology, and construction industries.
The Discovery campus houses the District’s Adult Education program. This makes it convenient for students to take advantage of additional opportunities to take credit recovery classes through concurrent enrollment. The school offers post-secondary counseling and support in American River College admittance, and supports high school students to concurrently enroll in the Advanced Education program through Los Rios Community Colleges. DHS has established partnerships with community-based organizations, like United College Action Network (U-CAN) and Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT), which provide valuable mentoring for youth as well as post-secondary support to students.
